{"id":5024,"date":"2016-04-07T20:35:44","date_gmt":"2016-04-07T20:35:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/first-pepperoni.flywheelsites.com\/?p=5024"},"modified":"2025-11-03T13:57:53","modified_gmt":"2025-11-03T13:57:53","slug":"skeena-lng-on-hold","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/2016\/04\/07\/skeena-lng-on-hold\/","title":{"rendered":"Update: Skeena LNG Decision on Hold"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">After scientists raise questions about Skeena LNG project&#8217;s impacts on salmon, Canadian ministers press company for answers.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Canada\u2019s minister for environment and climate change has delayed a decision on a $12 billion liquefied natural gas terminal at the mouth of the Skeena River, amid new concerns about the project\u2019s impacts on salmon and climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Catherine McKenna announced the delay on March 21, following a <a href=\"http:\/\/flora-bank.wix.com\/scientist-letter\">letter to her by more than 130 Canadian and international scientists.<\/a> They called the federal project review \u201cflawed\u201d for vastly underestimating risks to salmon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Pacific Northwest LNG cooling and export facility, backed by Malaysia\u2019s state oil company Petronas, would be built in the estuary of the Skeena, Canada\u2019s second largest wild salmon river and a stronghold for Pacific salmon. Home to some of the largest Chinook and steelhead ever recorded, \u00a0the river\u2019s combined tribal, recreational, and commercial fishing economy is worth $110 million a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Salmon Strongholds: Skeena River\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/183724209?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The export facility would include a Golden Gate-sized bridge over Flora Bank, an eelgrass bed used by juveniles from at least 40 different salmon populations originating&nbsp;throughout the Skeena River and beyond. Threatening this vulnerable biological bottleneck threatens the entire Skeena River system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe federal review ignored much of the science demonstrating&nbsp;Flora Bank\u2019s importance to Skeena salmon, and therefore the review stands on shaky ground,\u201d said Matt Sloat, Wild Salmon Center\u2019s director of science and one of the letter\u2019s signatories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canadian environmental authorities have also raised concerns about the energy-intensive LNG facility&#8217;s impact on climate change. According to statistics provided by the project builders and presented in the environmental review, the project would <a href=\"http:\/\/behindthenumbers.ca\/2016\/02\/25\/petronas-pacific-northwest-lng-profile-of-a-carbon-bomb\/\">raise British Columbia carbon emissions by 8.5%<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The emissions totals&nbsp;climb when&nbsp;considering&nbsp;upstream methane emissions released during the ongoing hydraulic fracturing \u2013 \u201cfracking\u201d \u2013 needed to extract gas from deep deposits, before it is exported.
