{"id":27821,"date":"2025-04-15T00:28:07","date_gmt":"2025-04-15T00:28:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/?p=27821"},"modified":"2026-03-19T18:23:48","modified_gmt":"2026-03-19T18:23:48","slug":"how-proactive-salmon-conservation-can-deliver-global-benefits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/2025\/04\/15\/how-proactive-salmon-conservation-can-deliver-global-benefits\/","title":{"rendered":"How proactive salmon conservation can deliver global benefits"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/fisheries\/advance-article\/doi\/10.1093\/fshmag\/vuaf011\/8090126\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new study in the journal <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/fisheries\/advance-article\/doi\/10.1093\/fshmag\/vuaf011\/8090126\"><em>Fisheries<\/em><\/a> shows how a salmon-focused ecosystem protection strategy in the North Pacific can deliver meaningful results in the global drive to protect biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The approach, called the stronghold strategy, aims to proactively protect the world\u2019s greatest remaining \u201cstrongholds\u201d<\/strong>\u2014a select group of salmon, steelhead, and trout systems that collectively comprise 119 distinct watersheds. According to Wild Salmon Center President &amp; CEO Guido Rahr\u2014lead author of the peer-reviewed study\u2014salmonids center the strategy because they are both iconic and globally recognized as keystone species. (Image courtesy Wild Salmon Center.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Strongholds are distinguished by their relatively high levels of wild salmon abundance, productivity and diversity, along with habitat quality capable of sustaining wild salmon for decades. They include vast and stunning places like <a href=\"https:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/campaigns\/bristol-bay\/\">Bristol Bay, Alaska<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/campaigns\/skeena-river\/\">Skeena<\/a> and Dean watersheds in <a href=\"https:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/work\/where-we-work\/british-columbia\">British Columbia<\/a>. <strong>According to the authors, strongholds can play a key role in advancing the world\u2019s 30 x 30 conservation goals<\/strong>. But in action, the stronghold strategy is uniquely proactive.<strong> In the decades since the strategy\u2019s conception, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/category\/accomplishments\/\"><strong>Wild Salmon Center and a network of partners have protected 35.7 million acres of overall habitat and prioritized wild fish biodiversity in 89 rivers across the North Pacific<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Kol_1800-1500x850.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21864\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kol River Salmon Refuge, Kamchatka. In Oregon, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/2025\/01\/15\/where-we-see-hope-for-endangered-coho-salmon\/\">NOAA Fisheries noted an increase in coho salmon population diversity<\/a> following the strategic expansion of coastal \u201cwild fish zones.\u201d Another case study tracks the 2006 <a href=\"https:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/2016\/02\/16\/kol-refuge-permanent\/\">designation of Russia\u2019s Kol watershed as the first World Heritage Site dedicated to salmon<\/a>, as led by Wild Salmon Center and a coalition of Russian partners. (Photo credit: Paul Jeffrey.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The stronghold strategy aims to ensure that these systems will remain safe for decades, Dr. Sloat notes. <strong>For each system, success rests on achieving three pillars of durability<\/strong>:&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Layered habitat protection and restoration<\/strong>. Each stronghold needs policies that can protect land and water through shifts in politics and economic pressure.&nbsp;<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A fisheries management emphasis on wild fish biodiversity<\/strong>. According to Dr. Sloat, the rich genetic and life history diversity of salmon is the species\u2019 superpower, enabling them to survive ice ages, floods, and dramatic climate changes.&nbsp;<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A culture of local stewardship<\/strong>. The enduring presence of local land and water guardians builds what Rahr calls a human \u201cimmune response\u201d\u2014community members who stand ready to defend a stronghold from threats.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe stronghold strategy is about more than ensuring a future that we can share with these amazing wild fish,\u201d Rahr says. \u201cIt\u2019s about a legacy of wild rivers and wild places that we inherited, and that we owe to our children and grandchildren.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe stronghold strategy is about more than these amazing wild fish.
