Sockeye DNA Project Enters Exciting New Phase"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our work to understand genetic characteristics of vulnerable wild fish runs will speed their protection on British Columbia&#8217;s Central Coast.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the language of the Nuxalk First Nation, the place name for the Kimsquit River\u2014\u201cSuts\u2019lhm\u201d\u2014means \u201cplace of sockeye.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So it follows that this remote British Columbia river was a focus of Wild Salmon Center Salmon Watershed Scientist Dr. Will Atlas&#8217;s work this summer, collecting sockeye salmon DNA alongside Nuxalk and Heiltsuk First Nations partners.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Kimsquit_02-56-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18783\" width=\"375\" height=\"563\"\/><figcaption>Wild Salmon Center Salmon Watershed Scientist Dr. Will Atlas (left) collecting sockeye samples on the Kimsquit River this summer with Nuxalk Guardian Watchman Ernie Tallio. (PC: Olivia Leigh Nowak)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>This baseline genetic data is driving a <a href=\"https:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/2019\/11\/21\/mapping-bcs-wild-salmon-and-steelhead-with-dna\/\">groundbreaking research project<\/a> co-led by WSC and Simon Fraser University in partnership with Canada\u2019s Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), First Nations partners including the Heiltsuk, Nuxalk, Kitasoo\/Xai\u2019Xais, and Lax Kw\u2019alaams First Nations, along with the <a href=\"https:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/who\/partners\/crc\/\">Coastal Rivers Conservancy<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Now, early findings from this project are revealing rare and understudied runs within B.C. Central Coast rivers like the Kimsquit: findings that support traditional knowledge descriptions of this region\u2019s once-thriving sockeye populations<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project\u2019s ultimate goal, says Dr. Atlas, is to create a sort of \u201cRosetta Stone\u201d for sockeye and other wild salmon by merging new and archival data, enabling us to understand these species like never before\u2014what lakes and creeks they come from, how long they\u2019ve spent in the ocean, and other life history characteristics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHistorically, the Central Coast\u2019s sockeye runs have not been well documented by fishery managers,\u201d Dr. Atlas says. \u201cWe simply haven\u2019t known how these fish populations have changed over time, and how they\u2019re making a living now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The project\u2019s ultimate goal is to create a sort of \u201cRosetta Stone\u201d for sockeye and other wild salmon, enabling us to understand these species like never before.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the early 1990s, DFO hasn\u2019t maintained counts for these populations: one of several factors contributing to a widening data gap that tracks with the sharp decline of the region\u2019s commercial sockeye fisheries. <strong>But for Central Coast First Nations, for whom sockeye has long been a key food source and central to cultural identity, it\u2019s long past time to elevate the visibility of this foundational species<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWithout knowing more about the life histories now playing out in these isolated rivers and lakes, recovery efforts for Central Coast sockeye are just shots in the dark,\u201d Dr. Atlas says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To fill these critical data gaps, the team\u2019s researchers are drawing from the rapidly expanding toolkit of modern genetic science to pinpoint the number of unique sockeye populations in Central Coast watersheds, along with their migration routes and run timing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Kimsquit_02-14-1500x1000.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18789\"\/><figcaption>To conduct field research in remote B.C. (PC: Olivia Leigh Nowak)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These powerful new insights could show how sockeye are adapting to changing conditions in these watersheds. <strong>They could also help fisheries managers develop more <a href=\"https:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/2020\/12\/09\/indigenous-fishing-techniques-hold-promise-for-future\/\">selective guidelines for mixed-stock fisheries<\/a>, where vulnerable sockeye runs might overlap with target harvest species.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The team\u2019s researchers are drawing from the rapidly expanding toolkit of modern genetic science.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>WSC and our project partners launched this project in 2021, thanks to a <a href=\"https:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/2021\/02\/23\/in-b-c-an-exciting-salmon-genetics-tool-gets-a-boost\/\">grant from Genome BC\u2019s GeneSolve program<\/a>. This summer, field researchers received a welcome boost from unusually strong sockeye returns: unexpected abundance that helped us reach sampling thresholds of approximately 50 individuals from 118 unique sockeye runs spanning B.C.\u2019s North and Central Coasts.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/BC-sockeye_1500x1500-352x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18803\"\/><figcaption>BC sockeye in spawning colors. (PC: Alamy) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Now, with data collection near completion, Dr. Atlas and his team are entering an exciting new project phase: analysis and interpretation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the compelling early revelations is evidence of several river-type sockeye populations spawning in large numbers in areas of the Kimsquit, Kwatna, and Atnarko Rivers that lack an adjoining rearing lake.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It\u2019s an exciting finding, Dr. Atlas explains, because this river-type life history has only sporadically been documented in the past<\/strong>. Typically, sockeye spawn in close proximity to a rearing lake, where juveniles will spend a year or two growing before migrating to sea. These populations defy that pattern, and comprise a distinct and uniquely important component of sockeye life history diversity on the Central Coast.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>First Nations here always knew there were these unique sockeye runs,\u201d Dr. Atlas says. \u201cBut now we have the receipts<\/strong>. The fact that Central Coast sockeye are maintaining biodiversity even as overall numbers decline means that they\u2019re well-positioned for recovery \u2014if we give them room to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat we\u2019re learning about Central Coast sockeye diversity is really exciting,\u201d Dr. Atlas says. \u201c<strong>It\u2019s possible that our research can help enable a level of precision in fisheries management and recovery planning decisions that wasn\u2019t previously possible.
