Spawning in side channels of braided river reaches far upstream, they travel herculean distances\u2014in Canada, as far as 7,700 miles (3,500 kilometers) up the Yukon River; in Russia, deep into the Amur River basin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chum are a major source of food in <a href=\"http:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/work\/where-we-work\/japan\/\">Japan<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/work\/where-we-work\/russia\/\">Russia<\/a>\u2014particularly their roe, which is highly prized. In North America, however, chum are among the least valued salmon. Elsewhere in the <a href=\"http:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/work\/where-we-work\/\">Pacific<\/a>, chum are second in abundance only to pink salmon, except in <a href=\"http:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/work\/where-we-work\/oregon\/\">Oregon<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/work\/where-we-work\/california\/\">California<\/a>, where they are less numerous than <a href=\"http:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/salmon-species\/steelhead\/\">steelhead<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/salmon-species\/chinook-salmon\/\">chinook<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/salmon-species\/coho-salmon\/\">coho<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Size<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Next to Chinook, chum salmon are the largest of Pacific salmon, weighing 6.5 to 13 pounds (3\u2009\u2013\u20096 kg) and measuring up to 40 inches (100 cm) at maturity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Life history<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-11032 size-full\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"470\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/kspencer_chum_juvie.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29677\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/kspencer_chum_juvie.jpg 470w, https:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/kspencer_chum_juvie-300x100.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 470px) 100vw, 470px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Chum fry |<em> \u00a9 Kate Spencer<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Chum live 3\u2009\u2013\u20095 years. They are most closely related to pink salmon and spawn in the lower reaches, side channels, and tributaries of gravel-bed rivers; unlike pink, however, chum can also be long-distance migrators. Most populations rely little on freshwater for development, beginning their ocean migration soon after emerging from the redd. Run timing varies; chum return to northern rivers from June to September and to more southerly rivers from August to November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few Japanese chum salmon runs return as late as early February. Chum maintain a diet of large, gelatinous zooplankton while in the ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cultural role<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Chum are a staple for people in the western Pacific and for native peoples in <a href=\"http:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/work\/where-we-work\/alaska\/\">Alaska<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/wildsalmoncenter.org\/work\/where-we-work\/british-columbia\/\">British Columbia<\/a>. They are favored for drying by the indigenous Amur peoples because chum preserve better than the less oily pink salmon.
